#29: Voltron Legendary Defender - Voltron

Finally, with all five of the lions in my collection, I can form Voltron. At about a foot and a half tall, this is a pretty sizable Voltron, definitely bigger than the original from when I was a kid. I like that all four of the lions that form the limbs get different sculpts from each other. Although that's accurate to their design, it would have been easy to cheap out and just do one sculpt for the legs and one for the arms. All the limbs are the same price, so they are all similarly sized, with the legs being larger. This does have a drawback of the arms looking a little too long. Also, the elbows are fairly restricted and don't bend as much as I'd like. While there are some definite drawbacks to this version of Voltron, they are outweighed by having such a large Voltron that is assembled from the five different lions. It's still very cool looking. There is a smaller, Voltron that can't be disassembled which is cheaper and more proportional, and looks to have better articulation. That might be a better option, depending on what you're looking for. For me, having a Voltron that is formed from the lions is pretty important, so I'm glad to have this version.

#28: Voltron Legendary Defender - Legendary Red Lion

Finally, the last lion of the Voltron force, the red lion. Its main accessory is a big projectile launcher that plugs in on its back. It looks like it could do some damage as a melee weapon as well, if ammo runs low. There's also the small Keith in speeder accessory which can be stowed in the lion's chest. Voltron's sword comes in two pieces, and one of them comes with the red lion (not pictured here).

#27: Voltron Legendary Defender - Legendary Yellow Lion

When I got the green and blue lions, the yellow and red lions were gone by the next time I went back. I had to wait a while, but eventually they got back in stock. When I found them, the blue and green lions were already gone, so it makes me wonder if the same person who bought the yellow and red lions before got the blue and green lions this time. So anyway, here's the yellow lion, piloted by Hunk. Of the lions, this one is the tank, and forms the left leg. There is a detachable disk launcher that shoots the disks surprisingly far. This time around, I remembered to leave out the little speeder for size comparison.

#19: Voltron Legendary Defender - Legendary Blue Lion

Along with the green lion, I bought the blue lion, figuring a leg would go well with an arm. As a leg, it is slightly larger, and has a more defined midsection since it doesn't need to function as an elbow. The blue lion has a water/ice affinity. There is a removable ice beam cannon with a launching projectile. Now I just have to wait for the red and yellow lions to become available again so I can assemble Voltron.

#18: Voltron Legendary Defender - Legendary Green Lion

It took forever to get the rest of the legendary sized lions in stock, but they finally showed up at Target. My local Target does sometimes have trouble getting new things in stock in a timely manner, but it does seem to be a widespread problem with this line, so it is probably fault of Playmates in this case. I did buy two of the lions when I first saw them, but by the next time I was there, the other two had been sold and stock hasn't been replenished. Anyway, green generally being my favorite color, I decided to go with the green lion as one of my first choices. Piloted by Pidge, the green lion's specialty is stealth. It has a shield on its back that ends up on Voltron's shoulder, but is not what Voltron actually uses as a shield. That's formed by the black lion's red "wings." Forming Voltron's arm, this version has the advantage over the original toys of being able to tuck its legs into its body, so they're not just hanging there like in the old version. There is also a missile launcher that can be mounted on its back, and the green lion includes part of Voltron's sword. There's also the tiny speeder with pilot that all the lions include, which can be stored in the lion's chest. What's really amusing is that if you plug only one of the lions into the black lion, it will only play voice clips of Shiro asking where the other pilots are.

#10 Voltron Legendary Defender - Legendary Black Lion

Stranger Things may have been the big hit of the Summer from Netflix, but the first season of the new Voltron cartoon was also released around the same time. I've only recently got around to watching it, and I am enjoying it so far. I have long ago learned the lesson that cartoons I enjoyed as a child have not aged well, so I am not particularly interested in re-watching the original series. But the new one modernizes things well enough, while retaining the things I remember enjoying. And just in time for the second season, there are now toys. I passed on the semi-recent Mattycollector exclusive Voltron for cost reasons, and y'know... Because Mattycollector. But now the Voltron toys are being made by Playmates and available at retail, so I am definitely down for a Voltron toy that is formed from the five individual lions. So far, Target has only been stocking the Black Lion, so that is the one I am starting with. Apparently this version of Voltron is 16 inches tall, so the black lion is pretty sizable. The newer Voltron design is less blocky, so the individual lions are as well. There are electronics, there is a button that plays different sounds and makes the chest light up. Adding each additional lion unlocks more phrases and sound effects, with apparently more than 50. I haven't heard "And I'll form the head" but I hope that's in there. There is a tiny speeder with Shiro in it that fits inside a space inside the lion's chest. It's really small and not very detailed, so I didn't include it in the picture. But at least we are getting toys of the pilots in some form.
